A picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is a medical imaging technology used to conveniently and economically store and access images from multiple modalities. Electronic images and reports are transmitted digitally via a PACS – thus elimatinating the need for manual film files. This universal format for PACS image storage and transfer is DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine). A PACS consists of four major components:
Imaging modalities (X-ray, CT, MRI, etc.)
A secured, HIPAA compliant network for transmission
Workstations for interpreting and reviewing images
Archives for storage and retrieval of images and reports
Merging PACS into a hosted, virtual environment versus a hard-install allows instant access from anywhere, anytime as long as you have an internet connection.
